Complete question. Ryan has 805 pesos in his pocket consisting of 1-peso coins, 5-peso coins and 20-peso bills. He has 17 more 5-peso coins than 1-peso coins. He also has 6 fewer 5-peso coins than 20-peso bills. How much 1-peso coins, 5-peso coins and 20-peso bill does he have in his pocket?

Solution. Let the number of 1-peso coins, 5-peso coins and 20-peso bills be x, y and z respectively.

  • Given that, he has 17 more 5-peso coins than 1-peso coins. Then,
  • y = x + 17 or, x = y - 17 .....(1)

  • Also given, he has 6 fewer 5-peso coins than the 20-peso bills. Then,
  • y = z - 6 or, z = y + 6 .....(2)

  • Here, Ryan has 805 pesos in his pocket. So,
  • x + 5y + 20z = 805
  • or, y - 17 + 5y + 20y + 120 = 805, by (1) and (2)
  • or, 26y = 702
  • or, y = 27

  • Putting y = 27 in (1) and (2), we get
  • x = 10 and z = 33.

Answer. The number of 1-peso coins, 5-peso coins and 20-peso bills are 10, 27 and 33 respectively.
