Let there be x hens and y cows.

Each have 1 head hence x+ y =48(1)

Hens have 2 feet and cows have 4 feet

So 2x + 4y =140(2

Solving (1) and (2) we get:

2x+ 2y =96 ( multiplying by 2)

2x +4y =140 subtracting we get

-2y =-44 Therefore y=22 = Cows

Hence x= 26 hens
