The reason that the ocean is “so deep” is because it is only so far from the surface to the bottom. If all the ice bound freshwater was to melt that would add a couple hundred more feet to the depth. Because in the past ages, lots of water fell on Earth & all of these got collected in various depressions. The average depth of the ocean is about 12,100 feet . The deepest part of the ocean is called the Challenger Deep and is located beneath the western Pacific Ocean in the southern end of the Mariana Trench, which runs several hundred kilometers southwest of the U.S. territorial island of Guam
