_____________________________

Sir Charles Wood, president the Board of Control in England, sent a dispatch to governor-general Lord Dalhousie with his recommendations on the system of education to be followed in India. This Dispatch was to become the blueprint for education in India for a long time to come. The main points of the dispatch were as follows.

● Provision was made for a systematic method of education from the primary level to the university level.

● An education department was to be set up in all the provinces.

● In Bombay, Madras and Calcutta, universities world to be opened along the lines of London universities.

● Every district was to have one government school.

● Grants-in-aid were to be given to private schools affiliated to the government.

● Indians world to be taught their mother tongue as well.

Many schools were opened to impart the Western system of education in English. Even Christian missionaries is teaching through Indian languages were made to switch over to English. Wealthy Indians begin attending such schools, and became 'Indian in colour but English in thought and taste'. Ironically, it was these educated Indians who spread the ideas of freedom and liberty to the common people.
