This reaction is an example of oxidation reaction.

Explanation:

S8(s) + 12 OH –(aq) ----> 4S–2(aq) + + 6H2O(l)

This is an oxidation reaction as there is change in the oxidation state of sulfur.

If we look at the oxidation state of sulfur then

For sulfur:

O.S of sulfur = -2

S8(s) ------> 4 S-2

(-2) 8 = - 16

(4) (-2) = - 8 -2 = -10

As sulfur has lost 6 electron there is undergoes oxidation.

Similarly

12 OH – -----> 6 H2O

For Oxygen:

12 (-2) = - 24 ----> 6 (-2) = - 12

Oxygen is also oxidized.
