Given:

Saba has 3 metal bars. To understand if they are magnets or not, she undertakes a small experiment an holds the ends of the bars close to one another. The image given in the question is attached below.

To find:

Conclude which bar(s) is/are magnetic? Give reason for your response.

Solution:

First, let us know about the properties of a magnet.

A magnet has 2 poles - north pole and south pole.

Same poles repel each other. (N-N, S-S)

Opposite poles attract each other. (N-S, S-N)

From given result, it's clear that only one metal bar, that is, the bar 2 has the properties as of the magnet, so bar 2 is a magnet.

As, bar 2 attracts and repels each other, whereas, bar 1 has only 1 pole and bar 3 attracts for both the sides.
