'Two Gentlemen of Verona' set in a city of Italy, during the post-war conditions brings out the message of the author, A.J. Cronin that as long as there are selfless, sincere and devoted people like Nicola and Jacopo are present on the Earth, we have a hope for humanity. The two pre-teen brothers, used to a cultured life, are devastated during the war and end up on the streets as orphans. To add to their trouble, their sister Lucia suffers from tuberculosis of the spine. The pessimism of the post-war situation can easily numb the spirit of an adult but these two boys work day and night, performing different tasks, running errands to provide for their sister's hospital fee. They don't spend anything on themselves but make sure that their sister recovers and gets back to her singing. Moreover, their self-esteem is unmatched as they don't even want to talk about their problems in front of the narrator, let alone asking him for any favors. These little boys show their indomitable spirit and set an example for the reader to keep alive the spirit of humanity.
