Answer:

Vibhakti is a beautiful concept - one of the original and outstanding contributions of Samskrit grammar.

Samskrit and hence a the mainstream Indian languages have only 7 vibhaktis (why only 7 vibhaktis should be a question naturally )

Vibhakti is all about relationships. It drives three types of relationships

Relationship with verb [also called kAraka vibhakti]

Relationship with another object [sambanda vibhakti]

Relationship with another word [upa pada vibhakti]

vibhakti is always applied to nouns. Vihakthi is like a suffix (pratyaya) attached to a stem word.

bAla (boy) is a stem word - when a pratyaya (called su) is added to bAla it magically becomes bAla:

when ou is added to bAla - it becomes balou

when jas is added to bAla - it becomes bAlA:

[how this chemical reaction happens is a matter of in depth study in samskrit - pAni defines how various elements and alloys come in to existence in his ashtAdyAi sutrams]

kAraka vibhakti examples

there are 6 kAraka vibhaktis. Each kArakam denotes a particular meaning [doer, result, instrument, taker, giver, location]

bAla: gruham gacchati [boy goes home] - Here bAla: is first vibhakti that it is related to the verb gachchati (to go) as a actor (subject).

bAlam pashyAmi [i see the boy] - here bAlam is a vibhakti form that is related to the darshana kriya

bAlAya dadAmi - [i give for the boy] - here bAlAya is a vibhakti form that is related to dAna kriya

sambanda vibhakti example

bAlasya mAta - here bAlasya is a vibhakti form that is used to denote his mother - here the vibhakti is not related to any verb however it is related to another object (mother)

upa pada vibhakti

upa pada vibhakti’s are those where in a vbhakti is merely used to denote another word in the sentence - the purpose of the vibhakti is to justify the presence of a particular word.
