Assuming the standard, linguistic interpretation, the answer would be 25, given that the resulting (x+5)*6 = 180.
However, assuming non-standard linguistic wording, one might argue that “the number” is exactly that which you first thought of when prompted. For me, this answer would be 1, since that was the number I intially thought of.
The third interpretation is that the second sentence is a prompt for the conclusion, without regard to the first sentence. Then the answer is 180.
This riddle flaunts some of Grice's maxims, which are maxims of the Cooperative principle of linguistics, which describes how speakers and listeners act cooperatively and mutually accept one another to be understood in a particular way
