Safety Measures
Earthquakes can make huge structures and buildings collapse, and
cause cracks in the earth. The destruction caused by an earthquake
depends upon its magnitude and duration. The damage is more
when buildings are poorly constructed and when a city or town is
close to the epicentre. The shaking may dislodge rocks and result
in landslides. Fires may break out when flammable materials fall
on open fires or because of electrical short circuits. Water supply
lines may break and it may become difficult to obtain fresh water,
Since earthquakes are hard to predict, people living in earthquake
prone areas need to take safety measures. Tall buildings in such
areas should have their foundations on solid bedrock rather than
on loose surface material. Good quality materials should be used
for the construction. Modern architects design buildings which are
earthquake proof. People living in coastal areas should make sure that
they can move to safety on raised ground, in case of an earthquake.
