  1. Sahara Desert is located in Africa. It covers one-third of African Continent extending to about 11 countries. Some of the countries that lie within the Desert limits are: Egypt, Algeria, Chad, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Sudan, Tunisia, etc...
  2. On an average, Sahara Desert occupies an area of 86,00,000 km². Its area increases during summer months and decreases during winter months.
  3. Sahara Desert has grown 10% bigger over the last century. Causes include both Natural and Human-made Climatic changes.
  4. The Desert gets its name from the Arabic word 'sahra' which means 'Desert.'
  5. It is the World's Largest Hot Desert with an average temperature of 38°C to 46°C.
  6. Although 25% of this Desert is covered with sand-dunes, Sahara Desert is also made-up of salt-plains, gravel-plains, plateaus and even mountains where snowfall has been recorded during nights.
  7. Desert's highest point is Mount Koussi in Chad country which is an extinct volcanic mountain that stands at a height of 3,415 meters. Sand-dunes of this desert stand-up to 180 meters.
  8. This Desert is Home for a variety of Wildlife who have adjusted themselves to the extreme temperatures like fennec fox, deathstalcker scorpion, sand-viper snake, monitor lizards, etc...
  9. Trade-route from East to West passed through this desert with merchants carrying copper, salt, gold, silk, etc... Ancient History books have recorded a caravan of 12,000 camels passing through Egypt and Sudan in those times, for trade.
  10. Around 2.5 million people have made this desert their home. Most of them are permanently settled near oasis or have a nomadic lifestyle like Shepherds and camel owners who belong to Arabic origin.
