Given:

  • Sahil's current age = Twice the current age of Sham
  • Sahil's age five years ago = Three times the age of Sham five years ago

To find:

The present age of Sahil

Solution:

  • Let Sham's age be = y
  • Then, the current age of Sahil is = 2y

Five years ago:

  • Sham's age five years ago = y - 5
  • Then, Sahil's age five years ago = 3(y - 5)= 3y - 15

Sahil's current age = Sahil's age five years ago + 5

2y = (3y - 15) + 5

2y = 3y - 15 + 5

15 - 5 = 3y - 2y

10 = y ( Sham's current age)

Using the obtained value of y, we can calculate the current age of Sahil which we earlier assumed to be 2y.

2y = 2(10) = 20

Thus, Sahil's present age is 20 years.
