Answer for Class 11 Biology Students

Chrysophytes:

 It is one of the major groups of the kingdom Protista which includes diatoms.

 Diatoms occur in all aquatic (fresh water and marine) and moist terrestrial habitats.

 The cell walls have silica and form two overlapping shells which fit together as in a soap case. Example: Navicula, Cymbella.

 Siliceous cell walls do not decay easily. They pile up at the bottom of water bodies and form big heaps called diatomaceous earth. It is used in filtration of sugar, alcohol, oil, syrups etc. Being gritty, it is used in tooth paste and polishes.
