Ans: “Pollution” has been elaborately defined as the contamination of water or the alteration of the physical, chemical or biological properties of water, or the discharge of any sewage or trade effluent (whether directly or indirectly) which is likely to render such water harmful or injurious to:  a)    Public health or safety.  b)    Domestic, commercial, industrial, agricultural or other uses.  c)     Life and health of plants, animals or aquatic organisms.  The salient feature of Water Act, 1974 are:  The Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act was enacted for prevention and control of water pollution and maintaining or restoring of wholesomeness of water. The Central and State Pollution Control Boards have been constituted under section 3 and 4 of the water Act respectively.
