Explaination:

Charcoal is a form of carbon, which is a non-metal.

When non metal react with air, it forms non-metal oxide which is acidic in nature.

Thus, when carbon(charcoal) burns in air, it forms an acidic oxide called carbon dioxide.

(a)  The nature of the gas can be found by adding water to the gas in the test tube.  And then put some blue litmus solution in the jar.  The blue litmus solution turns red, this means that the gas is acidic in nature.

(b)

Equation 1: Burning of charcoal

Carbon + Oxygen  → Carbon Dioxide

C+O2 → CO 2

Equation 2 : Adding water to the gas to make the solution

Carbon Dioxide + Water → Carbonic Acid

CO 2 + H2O → H3CO 3
