Answer:

Salvatore was brought up in an ordinary fisherman house on the island of Ischia in Naples. Yet, we can see from the beginning, a pureness that he possesses. He ungrudgingly looked after his younger brothers, dressing and feeding them. As he grew, his love extended to a girl who lived on the Grande Marina. His world was full of love until he was forced to complete his military service for King Victor Emmanuel. Life for Salvatore changed as he was forced to leave his little island and live in a battleship among stranger and constantly serve his superiors. He was frightened but he endured it all as he waited to return home to his family and his fiancée. When he was diagnosed with a form of rheumatism that made him unfit for military work, he was joyful as he would be going back to his island and to his love.

When he got back home and soon found out his fiancée no longer wanted to marry him, he was heartbroken. He wept, but understood her and did not blame her or her family for their decision. He did not complain nor did he say anything bad about her. After a months of being home, he began working in his father's vineyard when his mother approached him saying a girl wanted to marry him. Assunta, the girl, as Salvatore described her was as ugly as the devil, older than he was and had been engaged to a man who was killed during his military service in Africa. After thinking about it and meeting Assunta, Salvatore decided to marry her. He took care of Assunta, worked in the vineyard and on the boat when his rheumatism allowed him to. He was gentle and sweet and had beautiful manners that life had not been able to obliviate. He took care of his children and was gentle and sweet with them, and laughed like a child when with them.

None of his attributes came because of his upbringing or because of all he seen of life outside his island, his goodness came from within, it was born with him and it formed his world. He saw his world as good and therefore, his world would always be good.
