Answer:
- Teeth - Teeths are the part of the oral cavity and perform a very important function in the initial phase of digestion via chewing. These are made up of hard matter because they have to cut, grind, and chew the complex and large food particles into smaller particles. These are classified into four groups; incisors are very sharp, present 4 above and 4 below and their function is to cut the food; canines are long and sharp, present 2 on the top and 2 on the bottom (one-one on each side) and these are basically used to tear the food; premolars are 8 in number, 4 above and 4 below (two-two on each side) and these crush the food; and molars are 12 in number in an adult (three on each sides top and bottom) and these basically grind and chew the food.
- Tongue - It helps in the three processes of digestion; mastication (chewing), movement of the food in the oral cavity for proper chewing and grinding, and deglutition (swallowing).
- Saliva - It is released by salivary glands in the oral cavity. It plays a very important role in the digestion process. It helps in the softening of food and makes it bolus for easy swallowing. Salivary amylases are enzymes, present in the saliva, that catalyzes the starch part of the food.
