here is ur answer mate

we will take cost of one file as x

                    cost of one pen as y

condition 1

sam

for a file = x

3 identical pens. = 3y

equation 1

x+3y = $32.85  eq 1

condition 2

leon

2  such files = 2x

8 such pens = 8y

equation 2

2x+8y = $83.50   eq 2

here i am eliminating x so multiple equation 1 by 2

x+3y = $32.85*2

= 2x+6y= $65.7

2x+8y = $83.50

(-)  (-)       (-) change of sign

= -2y= -$17.8

y= -17.8/-2

y = $8.9

x+3y = $32.85

x = $32.85 - 3 y

  = $32.85-3*$8.9

     = $32.85-$26.7

  x = $6.15

cost of one file as x   = $6.15

                    cost of one pen as  y= $8.9

hope this helps u
