Coarse-grained rocks generally weather faster than fine-grained rocks.

In fine-grained rocks, the particles are fine and packed closely together. It is difficult to dislodge these closely-packed fine particles and hence such rocks withstand weathering to a great extent.

Coarse-grained rocks have particles which are more loosely packed and is more susceptible to weathering.

Weathering is disintegration of rocks into smaller fragments by nature’s forces.

A fine grained rock would weather much faster.

Explanation:

  • A coarse-grained rocks texture appears to have large-sized grains of larger than 1 mm of size and the formed crystals have regular shapes and due to the rocks have large surface areas than the fine-grained rocks that have less surface area.
  • Rocks such as granite weather slowly as they are hard for water to penetrate easily. The limestone dissolves quickly as they are weak.
