Given  : Sameer visited his cousin and had to drive 135 miles north then 90 miles west.

At the end of his trip, he pulled out a map to determine how far from home he was.

To Find : What is the shortest distance from Sameer's house to his cousin's house

Solution:

North = 135 miles

West = 90 miles

North and west are perpendicular to each other

Hence Shortest distance can be found using Pythagoras theorem

Pythagoras' theorem: square on the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two perpendicular sides.

Shortest distance = √135² + 90²

= √45²(3²  + 2²)

= 45(√9 + 4)

= 45√13

= 45 (3.6)

= 162

shortest distance from Sameer's house to his cousin's house = 162 miles
