Sample 15. The average depth of Indian ocean is about
3000 m. Calculate the fractional compression AV/V, of
water at the bottom of the ocean, given that the bulk modulus
of water is 2.2 x 10°Nm 2.

Answer:

:- 1.36 \times  {10}^{ - 2} OR, 1.36\%

Explanation:

The Pressure exerted by a Column of water of 3000m on the bottom layer

p= hpg= 3000m \times 1000Kg {m}^{ - 3}  \times 10m {s}^{ - 2}

 = 3 \times  {10}^{7} Kg {m}^{ - 1}  {s}^{ - 2}

 = 3 \times  {10}^{7}  \: N {m}^{ - 2}

Fectional Compression (Delta sign) V/V, is

(Delta sign) V/V = Stress/B = (3 \times  {10}^{7} \: \: N {m}^{ - 2} )(2.2 \times  {10}^{9} n {m}^{ - 2} )

1.36 \times  {10}^{ - 2}  \: Or \: 1.36\%
