Given : Sample of ages (in months) of 18 children at a day care:

36, 42, 18, 32, 22, 22, 25, 29, 30, 31, 19, 24, 35, 29, 26, 36, 24, 28.

To Find : The median age of the children is...

Solution:

36, 42, 18, 32, 22, 22, 25, 29, 30, 31, 19, 24, 35, 29, 26, 36, 24, 28.

arrange the data in the order

18,  19,  22, 22, 24, 24,  25, 26, 28, 29,  29,  30, 31, 32, 35, 36, 36, 42

Data points are 18

Hence Median will be  Mean of ( 18/2 th and 18/2 + 1 th ) term

= Mean of 9th and 10th term

9th term = 28

10th term = 29

Median = (28 + 29)/2  = 28.5

The median age of the children is  28.5
