Sanctuaries can be temporary homes for Migratory birds.

  • Migration takes place in certain birds depending on the availability of food, shelter, and favorable climatic conditions.
  • It is a regular cyclic movement from north and south along a particular flight path.
  • Movement is mostly between the breeding and winter homes.
  • Some examples of migratory birds are - Arctic tern (longest distance migration record), swallows, storks, turtle doves, Albatross, etc.
  • Various bird sanctuaries visited by migratory birds are - Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary Chilika Lake Bird Sanctuary, Salim Ali bird sanctuary, Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary.
  • Mostly birds come to sanctuary in order to avoid cold and winter climatic conditions and to feed.
  • For example In winter, Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary invites various migratory birds such as Siberian Crane, Greater Flamingo, Eurasian teal, Yellow wagtail, rosy Pelican, and hundreds of many more migratory bird species.
  • Many Birds from Europe, Russia come to Bird sanctuaries in India to spend their winters. Therefore Sanctuaries are temporary homes for migratory birds.
