Sandra spent two thirds of her money on sweets and one sixth of her money on a drink. If she has $5 remaining, how much money did she have before buying the sweets and drink?

Well after spending half her money she had 50p so before this she had 1 pound. Before this she spent a quarter of her money so that means 1 pound must be 3/4. So she must have originally had £1.33.

It's also possible that the fractions refer to her original amount of money in which case 50p was left after spending 1/2+1/4=3/4 of her money. Meaning she started with £2.
