So, when sand grains are transported through different mediums like air and water, being coarser, they tend to abrade more with the bedding surface (while being transported by water ) or face attrition (in air) compared to finer grains. As a result their angularity in grain shape decreases, edges become rounded. Now, when rounded object are packed, void space remain among them, compared to when angular things are packed.
