Sandstone is porous because sand grains (with which sandstone is made up of) are coarser or larger in size, compared to silt and Clay.

So, when sand grains are transported through different mediums like air and water, being coarser, they tend to abrade more with the bedding surface (while being transported by water ) or face attrition (in air) compared to finer grains. As a result their angularity in grain shape decreases, edges become rounded. Now, when rounded object are packed, void space remain among them, compared to when angular things are packed.
