Sanjay can complete the work in 7 days

Given:

Sanjay can do a piece of work in 16 days

Ramesh can do it in 20 days

They worked together for 5 days

To find:

In how many days will Sanjay complete the remaining work

Solution:

Sanjay can do a piece of work in 16 days

⇒ The work can be done by Sanjay in one day = \frac{1}{16}

Ramesh can do the same work in 20 days

⇒ The work can be done by Ramesh in one day = \frac{1}{20}

The work can be done by both together 1 day = \frac{1}{16} + \frac{1}{20}

= \frac{5+ 4}{80} = \frac{9}{80}

Given Sanjay and Ramesh worked together for 5 days

⇒ work done in 5 days = 5 (\frac{9}{80}) = \frac{9}{16}

After completion of \frac{9}{16} work the remaining work

= 1 - \frac{9}{16}  = \frac{16 - 9}{16} = \frac{7}{16}

After 5 days Ramesh left work the remaining work is done by Sanjay

As we know Sanjay can complete  \frac{1}{16}  work in 1 day

The number of days to complete \frac{7}{16} of work = \frac{1}{\frac{1}{16} } (\frac{7}{16} )

= (\frac{16}{1} )(\frac{7}{16} ) = 7 days

Therefore, Sanjay can complete the work in 7 days
