Sanskrit has 33 simple consonants, and 11 vowels, in total, it has 44 phonemes (can be 44-46 depending on how one counts it). The reason I say simple consonants, is because Sanskrit often clusters consonant. So (त् + र् + य/t + r + ya) is made into one letter (त्र्य/trya).
