It is a reaction in which ester is heated in presence of a base (mainly NaOH) to give out ethanol & ethanoic acid, this process is used in making of soap. NaOH(Sodium Hydroxide)

example: CH3COOC2H5 ----------------> CH3COOH + C2H5OH Ethyl Ethanoate Ethanoic acid Ethanol

the ester is converted back to alcohol and sodium salt of carboxylic acid this reaction is known as saponification.
