Saprophytes and parasites both extract their nutrients from other sources. Rita has a confusion. She asks, ‘then why are they categorized into two different groups?’

Answer: Saprophytes also known as saprotrophs are organisms which derive/absorb nourishment/energy from dead and decaying matter. Although Parasites (Latin word “Parasitus”) means feeding on other living organism these parasites derive/absorb their nourishment/energy from the living organisms through roots called haustoria, the plant or living organism from where these parasites get their nutrition from are called the HOST.
