The pus formation around the wound on Jane’s elbow is due to a possible microbial infection. It is associated with bacterial (most common) and fungal infections.

Explanation:

As part of natural immune response (innate immunity), white blood cells (WBCs) are transported to the site of injury in order to fight any microbes that possibly entered. Thus, pus contains dead and living microbes as well as WBCs, debris of tissues, etc.

When there is formation of pus, the wound is said to be septic.

The sensory receptors for pain called nociceptors present in the skin are responsible for the pain associated with the injury that Jane felt.

Note that the injury Sarah got was a bruise, which is not an open wound, so  the chance of infection was low. Bruise or contusion is caused by breakage of capillaries under the skin and usually appear as a discoloration under that.
