The percentage passing marks needed is 40% .

GIVEN

Sarah scores 30% in a test and after review, even though her score is increased by 20%, she fails by 8 marks. It her post review score is increased by 25%, she will have 10 marks more than the passing score.

TO FIND

The percentage score needed for passing the examination.

SOLUTION

We can simply solve the above problem as follows;

Let the total score be 100x

Marks of Sarah = 30% of 100x = 30x

Marks after review = 30x + 20% of 30x = 30 +6 = 36x

Sarah fails by 8 marks.

So,

Passing marks = 36x + 8 (Equation 1)

Marks after post review = 36x + 25%of 36x = 36x + 9x = 45x

Passing marks = 45x - 9 (Equation 2)

Equating 1 and 2

36x + 8 = 45x -9

17 = 9x

x = 17/9

x = 1.8

Total marks = 100 × 1.8 = 180

Passing marks = 36 × 1.8 + 8 = 72.8

Percentage marks = (72.8/180)× 100 = 40%.

Hence, The percentage passing marks needed is 40% .
