Step-by-step explanation:

Given :-

No. of black socks by Sathvik = 12

No. of designer socks by Sathvik = 12

Solution :-

Sathvik picked up a sock.

He picked up a second sock. Now there are two possibilities :- Either it will match with the first sock or it will not match with the first sock.

He picked up a third sock. Now the possibilities are :- It will either match with the first sock he chose or it will match with the second sock he chose.

Hence, he will get a pair either way.

Let us have a look at the possible combinations to understand it clearly :-

(B,B,B) ; (B,B,D) ; (B,D,D) ; (D,D,D) ; (D,D,B) ; (D,B,B)

Here :-

D = Designer Socks

B = Black Socks

The order represents the three socks chosen.

⇒ Sathvik must take three socks in order to get a matching pair for sure.
