To find: The height of the tree with a diagram

Solution:

We draw a triangle ΔABC with sides AB, BC and CA. [ See the added picture for the required diagram. ]

Here, BC is the distance of the observation point from the foot of the tree AB and ∠ACB is the elevation angle.

Given:

BC = 5 m, AB = h m (say) and ∠ACB = 60°

From ΔABC, we get

AB / BC = tan(∠ACB)

or, h / 5 = tan60°

or, h = 5 * tan60°

or, h = 8.66

Answer: The height of the tree is 8.66 m
