• The Champaran Satyagraha of 1917 was Gandhi's first Satyagraha movement in India, and it is regarded as an important moment in the Indian Independence Movement.
• During the British colonial period, a farmer's rebellion occurred in the Champaran area of Bihar, India. Farmers were protesting the fact that they were forced to plant indigo for very little money.
• When Gandhi returned to India from South Africa in 1915 and saw peasants oppressed by indigo planters in northern India, he attempted to employ the same methods he had used in South Africa to organize large uprisings by people to resist injustice.

• The first popular satyagraha movement was Champaran Satyagraha. India's youth and freedom struggle were given direction by the Champaran Satyagraha.
