Water is the most important natural resource made available to humans by the earth. It is essential for survival of life and maintaining ecological balance. Life on Earth cannot be imagined without water and history is replete with wars fought between civilizations over water.

Although the Earth has 71% water, only 2.5% of its water is drinkable, and we are also wasting it. The fresh water we are using today has probably been in place since the beginning of life on Earth.

The amount of freshwater on Earth remains constant, but human pollution has increased manifold due to its intake; adequate measures must be taken towards optimal use of water and to ensure future availability of this most valuable resource of nature Methods such as rainwater harvesting should be implemented.

Explanation:

Save water save environment

Water is necessary for life. Water is needed for domestic, agricultural and industrial purposes.

Three-fourth of Earth's surface is covered by water bodies. 97 per cent of this water is present in oceans as salt water and is unfit for human consumption. Fresh water accounts for only about 2.7 per cent. Nearly 70 per cent of this occurs as ice sheets and glaciers n Antarctica and other inaccessible places. Only one per cent of fresh water is available and fit for human use. So it is very important to conserve this precious resource. And yet we are contaminating the existing water resources with sewage, toxic chemicals and other wastes. Increasing population and rapid urbanisation has led to over-use of water resources leading to water pollution and scarcity.

How to save water

•Fix your leaks

•Flush with less

•Turn off tap while brushing

•Bath for short duration

•Install a faucet aerator

Many areas in the western U.S. experience water shortages. At the beginning of 2014, California faced its worst drought in 500 years, according to B. Lynn Ingram, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley. The State Water Project, which supplements the local water supply for several California towns, is completely out of water.
