sawdust in with water cannot be separated by sedimentation method. Why?
Answers
These mixtures can be separated by sifting. Sometimes shaking will cause the heavier particles to settle to the bottom. If solid particles are mixed in a liquid or gas to form a suspension mixture, the ingredients will soon separate, with the heavier solid particles settling at the bottom
ANSWER :
Sawdust : The particles (of wood) made bu saw after cutting. It is lighter than water.
Sedimentation : The process in which the insoluble, heavy solid particles settle down on their own in a solution.
But the mixture of sawdust and water are insoluble. As the sawdust is lighter so it floats. But in sedimentation the substance used to settle down in water. Whereas the sawdust will not settle down in water when the mixture of sawdust and water is kept undisturbed. So, sawdust can not be separated by the process of sedimentation.
The mixture of sawdust and water can be separated by the process of filtration
Filtration : The process of separating insoluble liquids from a liquid using fine pores of the filter.
