(I) Answer the following question

1. Ans In chemistry, when two or more substances mix with each other without participating in a chemical change, the resulting substance is called a Mixture.

2. Ans Winnowing is used to separate heavier and lighter components of a mixture by wind or by blowing air.

3. Ans We will separate sand and water by sedimentation and decantation method. First we leave this mixture for some time. After some time, the sand which is heavier is settled down at the bottom. After that we will pour water into another container and the mixture will be separated.

4. Ans Distillation can be used to obtain pure water from a solution of salt in water.

During distillation, water is evaporated by heating and the water vapors are condensed and collected in the receiving flask. Salt remains in the distillation flask.

5. Ans Objects like coins, rocks, and marbles are more dense than water. They will sink. Objects like apples, wood, and sponges are less dense than water.

(II) Answer the following

Ans Hand Picking is necessary after winnowing because through winnowing, the wind blows away the lighter chaff while the heavier and slightly larger sized impurities fall back down and mix with the grain. ...
