Question

9. The sum of three consecutive numbers is 48. What are the numbers?

Given

  • Sum of three consecutive numbers = 48

To find

  • The three consecutive numbers.

Concept

To find the three consecutive numbers whose sum is equal to 48. Firstly, we will let the numbers as x, x + 1, x + 2. Then we will add all the number we have let and keep it equal to 48. From there we will get the value of x. To find those three consecutive numbers, substitute the value of x in the numbers which we have let.

Solution

Let the three consecutive numbers be x, x + 1, x + 2.

  • First number = x
  • Second number = x + 1
  • Third number = x + 2

According to the question,

⟶ x + x + 1 + x + 2 = 48

⟶ 3x + 3 = 48

⟶ 3x = 48 - 3

⟶ 3x = 45

⟶ x = 45/3

⟶ x = 15

The value of x = 15

Therefore, the three consecutive numbers :-

  • First number = x = 15
  • Second number = x + 1 = 15 + 1 = 16
  • Third number = x + 2 = 15 + 2 = 17

________________________________

Let's verify :-

The three consecutive numbers = 15, 16, 17

Their sum should be equal to 48.

Their sum -

⟶ 15 + 16 + 17

⟶ 48

Hence, verified.
