Given:

Sayantan sells a harmonium worth Rs. 4000

He gives a discount of 20%, 10% & 10% on the fixed price

To find:

(i) The selling price of the harmonium

(ii) The equivalent discount

Solution:

(i). Finding the selling price of the harmonium:

The marked price of the harmonium = Rs. 4000

We will use the following formula of successive discounts to calculate the S.P. of the harmonium:

where

x → first discount

y → second discount

z → third discount

∴ = =

Thus, the selling price of the harmonium is Rs. 2592.

(ii). Finding the equivalent discount:

We will use the following formula to find the equivalent discount for the three separate discounts of x%, y% & z%:

Here we have,

x = 20%

y = 10%

z = 10%

∴ The equivalent discount is,

=

=

=

=

=

=

Thus, the equivalent discount is 35.2%.
