Scattering of radiation by a free electron is described by the Thomson scattering
cross-section or = 6.65 x 10-25 cm² (we will derive this later in the course). Read
the last part of sec. 1.4 in Rybicki & Lightman (page 15), and show that the
electron scattering opacity of fully ionized hydrogen is kes = 0.40 cm²g-1. This
opacity is independent of frequency (except at gamma-ray frequencies).
