Lavandula officinalis, commonly known as genuine lavender, is a commercially grown species of the family Lamiaceae (Labiateae). The flowering spines on steam distillation, produces lavender oil of high aroma, which is in great demand in perfumery, flavouring, cosmetics and soap industries. The oil is valuable because of its wide utility, including its antiseptic and bacteriocidal properties. High flower yield and oil content (1.0-1.2%) suggest that in India, Kashmir valley is a suitable place for the establishment of this industry. As a result of development of agro-technology, lavender oil produced in CIMAP Farm at Pulwama, Kashmir meets international standards and is being sold to the perfumery industry regularly.
