For nearly a decade, the United Nations has been detailing the hardships children face getting to school across the world. For many children, each day is a journey, an epic test of will, just to make it to school.

Many children want nothing more than to be accepted.

Because technology is accelerating everyone's lives, the challenges they face during the school day have accelerated.

Childhood innocence is being jeopardised much earlier.

So here are five such issues that children face while attending school:

1. The Pressure to Pass

  • Evaluating one's scorecard is a stressor that all children will face.
  • Despite their youth, they are already feeling the pressure that was previously reserved for middle and high school students.
  • Schooling and achieving acceptable grades become more difficult as time passes.

2. Dealing with Bullies

  • Bullying and other anti-social behaviours are more prevalent in middle school.
  • Being mocked for simply being oneself is one of the most unpleasant experiences a child can have.
  • It can also be a difficult time if your child is the victim of bad behaviour.

3. Homesickness

  • When a child starts school for the first time, he is likely to experience homesickness or separation anxiety.
  • It is a big deal for pre-schoolers to leave the safe, familiar, and comfortable environments of their home and parents and enter a completely new and unfamiliar space – school.

4. Low self-esteem as a result of comparison

  • Even confident children can experience a significant drop in self-esteem during the middle school years.
  • When they are younger, they learn to deal with these situations.
  • That doesn't mean it won't happen again.

5. The Strong Desire to Engage in Harmful Activities

  • Middle school is most likely the first time your child decides to experiment with risky behaviours such as drinking, smoking, and drug use.
  • Unfortunately, there is no one sure-fire way to prevent your ward from making such a grave error.
