Thief Knot

The thief knot resembles the reef knot (square knot) except that the free, or bitter ends are on opposite sides. It is said that sailors would secure their belongings in a ditty bag using the thief knot, often with the ends hidden. ... It unties itself if the lines are pulled when the same action would seize a reef knot.

Ruskin Bond recalls his school memories. He was selected as a boy scout in a boarding school at Shimla and wondered how as he did not know the difference between the knots. He did not even know how to catch a thief as he did not know how to tie a thief knot and allow the thief to probably get away with a warning. He stated that he was probably selected because of a rumour that spread across the junior school that he was a very good chef. He helped Chippu in a tuck shop and encouraged him to make better samosas, jalebis and pakoras. Chippu was very fond of him and gave a free samosa often.

Mr. Oliver took the scouts on a journey to Tara Devi temple crowned mountain on the outskirts of Shimla. They invented a dish named Bond Bhujji. Mr. Oliver enjoyed a dish and Ruskin Bond earned a cookery badge. Ruskin Bond stated that nor did Mr. Oliver deserve to be a scout master nor he was supposed to be a scout. Mr. Oliver wanted to give them a lesson on following him by tracking the trail into the forest. But instead of following the trail the boys started swimming in a pool of clear water. Mr. Oliver who waited for the boy scouts to find him also lost his way and was accompanied by some locals to the camp site. Mr. Oliver asked everyone to return all their good conduct and other badges.

When everyone was ready to go to sleep, Mr. Oliver asked Bond to give him some thing to eat but Bond refused as he stated that he had given back his cookery badge and wasn’t supposed to cook without it but then prepared an omelette.

They were supposed to leave immediately after breakfast the next morning. A bear entered into the tent on their camp site and came out entangled in a dressing gown.

Hence, this story is a humorous narrative that ended with a comical sight.
