Correct question :-

School x and school y play in a competition. School x has 8 more points than school y. School x has 3 times more points than school y. How many points does each school have

Solution :-

Method 1)

Let points of school x = A

Points of school y = B

School x has 8 points more than school y.

According to question,

=> A = B + 8 ___ (eq 1)

Similarly,

School x has 3 times more points than school y.

According to question,

=> A = 3 × B

=> A = 3B ___ (eq 2)

Substitute value of A in (eq 1)

=> 3B = B + 8

=> 3B - B = 8

=> 2B = 8

=> B = 4

Substitute value of B in (eq 2)

=> A = 3(4)

=> A = 12

•°• School x has 12 points and school y has 4 points.

Method 2)

Let points of school y be A.

So,

School x has 8 points more than school y.

Points of school x = A + 8

Also,

School x has 3 times more points than school y.

Points of school y = A

So, points of school x = 3A

According to question,

=> A + A + 8 = A + 3A

=> 2A + 8 = 4A

=> 2A = 8

=> A = 4

So,

Points of school x = 4 + 8

=> 12

•°• Points of school x is 12 and points of school y is 4.
