Scientists have discovered fossilized human remains in Iberia that have Neanderthal characteristics. These confirm the scientists' theory that Neanderthals and the earliest modern humans were closely related. Earlier it was believed that the Neanderthal man was a 'missing link between modern humans and a more primitive ape-like species. However, recent discoveries show that this is not so and that the Neanderthal men were in fact the first modern humans Interestingly, this also supports the biblical story of the evolution of the human species related to the Flood and Noah saving humans and animals about five thousand years ago. Anthropologist Marvin L. Lubenow has shown that the Neanderthal man was very similar to the earliest modern human species, except for the difference that the former had a much bigger skull. He also says that when we study the fossils of the Neanderthal man and that of modern man, we find that these fossils do not date from widely separated periods but periods that overlap. This shows that the two species did not exist at different times but more or less at the same time. Such discoveries as the one made in Iberia are significant in teaching us about our own origins.
