Before 1940, scientists could view the cell only under a light microscope. The invention of the electron microscope in 1940 enabled the scientists to observe the cell in greater detail.

It is not entirely true that cell organelles were not discovered till 1940. For example, Nucleus was discovered by Robert Brown in 1831, Plastids were discovered by Haeckel in 1866, Golgi Apparatus was first seen by George in 1867 and Mitochondria was discovered by Kolliker in 1880.
But the microdetails of these organelles were quite a mystery until 1940s when the discovery of Electron Microscope just revolutionized this discipline of Biology. Aside from discovering microdetails of these known organelles, Electron Microscope led to the discovery of more cell organelles and various cellular structures like Ribosomes, Endoplasmic Reticulum, Cytoskeletal Structures, Centosomes (having Centrioles), Microbodies like Peroxisomes and Glyoxysomes and the most important of all; the fine details of structure of DNA.
