The scene is set in an arena in the kingdom of King Francis. The arena houses wild lions pitting against each other in full fury. King Francis is watching the sport along with his courtiers including Count de Lorge and his lover.

King Francis: We must be glad to be up here rather than down there at the mercy of those ferocious beasts.

De Lorge’s lover hears this and decides to put her glove into the arena to show the king and his subjects how devoted her lover is to her. She does so and looks at her lover with a smile. As everybody looked on, the Count gives her a bow and springs into the arena. He is back in a minute with the glove. But, contrary to what his love expects, he throws the glove on her face.

King Francis: You are truly a brave young man. But, the truth is that it is not love that made her do such a thing. Rather, it is just an act of her vanity.
