Rahul: Mr Chairman,
Judges, and ladies and gentleman of the floor: I stand here to represent all
those out there who like me want a new law to be enforced that bans smoking in
all public places. We have already seen laws that stop smoking in restaurants,
in parks, on public transport and so the question I want to ask is why not on
pavements, at bus stops and in towns and villages?
Sunil: I can answer that for you quite easily:
it's up to the smoker where they choose to smoke not you and me.
Rahul: But if we can stop them from smoking in
closed places then surely we stop smoking in open places too. Statistics show
that 90% of all lung cancer cases are caused by smoking alone. Statistics also
show that each year 15,000 children are diagnosed with asthma because their
parents smoke. It's not only the smoker that is affected but everyone around
them.
Sunil: If you are saying that passive smoking is a
killer too then why are you not campaigning to enforce a law that bans smoking
completely?
Rahul: For the same reason you don't want to stop
smoking in public places, it's up to the smoker if they choose to smoke in
their own home, it is also up to them if they choose to poison themselves and
their families with the 60+ toxic substances in a cigarette, however it is not
up to the non-smoker walking down the street if they get poisoned with these
toxins because they have to share pavements with the smoker.
Sunil: The whole point of freedom is that everyone
is free but you are planning to discriminate against all those who smoke, then
you are stopping this free will. I, like about 10 million of us in Britain,
enjoy smoking and I believe it is relaxing to have a cigarette at the end of
the day. I have not seen any health impacts and I doubt I will!
Rahul: I want to close this debate with this:
Smoking is a killer, whether it's due to passive smoking or through choice of
smoking. Today, tobacco consumption is recognised as the UK's single greatest
cause of preventable illness and early death, with an estimated 102,000 people
dying in 2009 from smoking-related diseases including cancers. Smoking kills!
JUDGE: After listening to this very interesting
debate, I declare Rahul the winner. A new law should be enforced that bans
smoking in all public places.
