If you needed to establish whether water was pure water or sea water the easiest thing that I can think of without using laboratory equipment is simply boil it dry. If you have pure water it will boil dry with no residue. If you have sea water then it will obviously boil dry but will leave behind a residue of crystals (sodium chloride salt). Expose some of these crystals to a flame and if it turns the flame bright yellow colour, you will have established that your crystals contain sodium.
