Sea water is found to contain Nacl and MgCl2. If NaCl is 80% ionised and MgCl2 is 50% ionised then van't Hoff factor is -- -->1.3 /5/3.3/3.8

Answer:

We assume that NaCl and MgCl2 are dissociated completely.

Now, degree of dissociation, a = (i-1)/(n-1)

For NaCl --> Na+ + Cl-, n= 2

So, 0.8 = (i-1)/(2-1) which gives i= 1.8

For MgCl2 --> Mg2+ + 2Cl-, n=3

So, 0.5 = (i-1)/(3-1) = i= 2

Hence, combined vant Hoff factor is 2+1.8 = 3.8
